Working for Inclusive Education

During the forum, Ann Power, Director of Student Services, DOEECD, reviewed the policy. Moreover, CACL's Executive VP, Krista Carr, and Gordon Porter, Director, IEC, and former New Brunswick Minister of Education, Jody Carr made presentations.

The event started in a highly productive way. NSACL Executive Director, connected with the speakers and organizers to share updates and catch up. Families and advocates arrived and Gordon Porter started the agenda with a great presentation about What is the special Ingredient of Inclusive Education. Then Ann Power took over and reviewed the policy and introduced the policy website, which would be published soon. During her presentation, families actively asked questions and provided feedback. After, the policy discussion, Jody Carr gave a presentation on why policy matters. In his presentation, he shared moving stories and talked about the 3P’s to Inclusive Education, which are policy, process (implementation), and practice (supporting teachers). In an ideal world, this three elements would be perfectly synchronized and executed in a way that effectively serves the challenges on Inclusive Education. He also shared great thoughts: children that learn together, learn to live together if inclusion is not working, It’s not inclusion .

In the afternoon, families shared their experiences, strengths, and hopes for Inclusive Education in NS in an engaging and welcoming activity. Stay tuned for more information from FIENS.
